Work-site Open Forum with Membership and EST Randy Thornhill
Executive Secretary-Treasurer (EST), Randy Thornhill visited union carpenters at their job site – the new University of California San Diego (UCSD) Biological and Physical Sciences building. Frankie Pena, Local 547 Business Agent Team Lead, explains that EST Thornhill often visits jobs sites to speak directly with members and buy them lunch.
These open forums, explains Pena, give EST Thornhill the opportunity to answer membership questions, hear their concerns, rejoice in their successes, and address any issues. This visit, over carne and pollo asado burritos, Thornhill spent time discussing changes to the Council in greater detail and assuring membership on the direction their Council is heading.
The UCSD Biological and Physical Sciences Building is a 128,000 square-foot, $111 million, seven-story facility that will include classrooms, offices, laboratories, and an auditorium with seating for 175 students, one of the largest on campus. About 35 members were on site that day working on concrete architectural walls for the long-time union signatory general contractor, McCarthy Building Companies, Inc.
“One thing is for sure… You will NOT find another EST in the Nation walking, talking and educating members the same way EST Thornhill does.” – Administrative Assistant, Pete Rodriquez.
