SWRCC TOP THREE: WEEK OF DECEMBER 13

Here is the SWRCC Top Three for the week of December 13th.

WA 417 and Local 714 Toy and Food Drive

More than 50 families in the Buena Park School District received one box of food and a selection of toys in a drive-thru Toy and Food Drive.  Members of Local 714 and the Women’s Auxiliary 417 donated hundreds of toys to give to families. The Women’s Auxiliary also secured the food donation from LA Food Bank.  Orange County-based contractors, Mowery Thomason Inc., and BN Builders donated toys to the Drive as well. WA 417 and  Local 714 organized this Toy and Food Drive in an effort to help the Buena Park School District’s families out during this time of need.  This event is part of Southwest Carpenters ongoing initiative to give back to our communities and create Community Wealth.

Starbucks Goes Union

Employees at a Buffalo-area Starbucks store voted to form a union, making it the only one of the nearly 9,000 company-owned stores in the United States to be organized and notching an important symbolic victory for labor at a time when workers across the country are expressing frustration with wages and working conditions.

The result, announced on Thursday by the National Labor Relations Board, represents a major challenge to the labor model at the giant coffee retailer, which has argued that its workers enjoy some of the best wages and benefits in the retail and restaurant industry and don’t need a union.
