Carpenters Share Christmas Cheer

The Christmas season has gotten a lot merrier for kids in Ventura County thanks to the Gold Coast Carpenters. Over 1,000 kids received a present courtesy of both the Ventura County Military Collaborative’s (VCMC) Operation Snowflake and the Ventura County Rescue’s “Christmas with a Mission” toy drives. Toys given away at the events were donated by local residents who had been running toy drives all through December and collected by the carpenters. The annual Christmas with a Mission event took place at Faith Community Church, where more than 200 volunteers handing out presents and staffing game booths, a bounce house and more. “It’s just an amazing event, it’s about bringing families closer, neighbors, just trying to connect with the community and that’s what you see when you look around,” said Anthony Ventura, member of local 805 and SWRCC special representative. “It’s a great feeling watching the kids faces light up as they walk in room. The parents always go for the most expensive gift, but watching the kids pick through them you realize it’s not about that. It’s making sure every kid gets that one special thing to them,” he continued. In addition to the toy drive, a mobile health clinic was also set up at the church, offering health screenings, flu shots and other medical services.

“It was a cool event. It felt good to give back and know I’m helping my community grow closer,” said Dan Ford, member of local 805 and SWRCC special representative. “We got out there about 6:30 to help get everything organized, setting up the tents and tables. I bring my kids every year. It’s not enough to just tell them to be good people. I want them to practice it; they need to see me do it too,” Ford continued. To end the day local 805’s COVER committee completed the second wave of their toy drive for disadvantaged veteran and active-duty military families. They were joined by the Los Angeles Rams cheerleaders who thanked the carpenters for their service to veterans and their hard work on the new Rams stadium.

The Southwest Carpenters continued the spirit of giving this week. The Southern California millwrights dropped off their toy donations to the Department of Children and Family Services and in Las Vegas, local 1977 carpenters did their best impressions of Santa’s elves for Peggy’s Attic at Children’s Haven toy drive.
